Students don’t always have books to call their own, but just $9 is enough to supply a student with a book from the Scholastic Book Fair every month for the entire school year.

That’s the basic premise of a Facebook post that’s gone viral over the last month, getting shared thousands of times by educators across the state. The message has connected with people throughout Faribault, who have been inspired to donate money to provide books for students in Faribault Public Schools.

Lincoln Elementary third-grade teacher Sara Lueken, one of several Faribault Public Schools teachers to share the Facebook post, brought in well over $300 in donations. That’s allowing her to pay for books for all 22 of her students and help fund another classroom, as well.

“We were asking for $9 to sponsor one student, and a couple people just gave me $100. I think people just realize how valuable reading is and that getting books into students’ homes is so important,” Lueken said.

Rotary Club of Faribault member Donn Johnson also realized the importance of the project. He suggested that the club should collect donations to go toward the Scholastic Readers Club just a couple weeks ago, and by Thursday Johnson had collected $1,280. Johnson presented Superintendent Todd Sesker with a check on Thursday.

“It was very spontaneous. Donn had hoped to collect enough to pay for books for two classrooms and it just took off and snowballed from there,” rotary club President Keith Kramer said.

One of Rotary International’s main focuses is supporting reading in education. Locally, the Rotary Club of Faribault has participated in numerous projects supporting Faribault schools over the years. Last year, they partnered in a project to plant trees at the elementary schools. Several rotary members read with elementary students weekly through the Rotary Readers program.

“Rotary has been incredibly supportive of all schools in Faribault,” Sesker said. “This is another great example of rotary’s commitment to education in our community.”
