Special Education

Special Education

Special Education is a mandated service available to children with disabilities, birth through age 21. The child must meet the special education criteria for one of the disability categories and be in need of special education services. Before a special education referral is made, interventions are tried in the regular education classroom to assist the child in being successful. If the interventions fail, an evaluation can be made by a school psychologist to determine the need for special education. Parental referrals for this evaluation may also begin the process.

Services provided by special education staff may include:

• Specific Learning Disabilities
• Behavioral Support
• Social Skills
• Speech-language pathology
• Occupational therapy
• Adapted physical education
• and other appropriate services as needed.

Special Education staff are located at each school building in the district. Parents of students with disabilities who are new to the district are encouraged to enroll at their neighborhood school.
